I find it kind of humorous that we're no longer being told to say no to sex. According to the Body Shop's new campaign for 'tantalizing lip balm' we're now supposed to say yes .. as long as it's to safe sex. It's clever, and about time in my opinion. Sex isn't a bad thing, nor has it ever been. It just has the potential to be dangerous when it falls into the hands of those who can't handle it. That's the case with anything though, right?

fly me to the moon (please)
Philip DeFranco is, if nothing else, extremely entertaining. This time last week, I was kicking myself for not getting 'philled in' on a more regular basis. His daily witty (and extremely speedy) updates on international daily events are incredibly informative, and I'm almost ashamed to admit, where I get most of my small talk. His douchebag of the day reiterates the fact that people are MORONS and we should all be reminded of this fact constantly. And of course, I've always been a sucker for any charming geeky man with an opinion. In true PhillyD fashion, I'm posting a link to his channel for your enjoyment (if I could put it in the sidebar, I would.) I almost feel like it's my obligation to get the word out there to those who don't know much about him, as I've taken quite a liking to the guy! So much in fact that I decided to check out his twitter page to see what all the hype was about. About twitter, I mean. My Auntie Joyce (who is actually my Great Aunt that sends me emails which are far more interesting and structured more beautifully than most of my friends are capable of sending me) ... (wait, what?) asked if I was on twitter and I declined with a slight chuckle.
This was true until this evening, when I caved and signed up.
I know what you're thinking, 'I thought you didn't buy into hype, you hypocrite!!?' I just had to see what the big deal was! So far, I still have yet to find if there even is one. I can see how the idea could be appealing if an individual was to 'follow' a bunch of their friends (and possibly their favourite celebrities) through their daily events, but there is truly no point to it otherwise. Essentially, it's just like a constant facebook status updater for those who find it crucial to let everyone know what they're doing and thinking at all moments of the day, what they're about to do, what their second cousin twice removed is thinking of buying to garnish next Saturday's salad .. and so on.
However, since joining twitter I've discovered that John Mayer REALLY likes Campbells soups and, thanks to Phil, that this has been going on in France. The article left me not only unsettled but ultimately upset to the point of tears, not to mention a little disappointed in mankind. I mean, just think how far we've come, yet so far we still have to go. If people are STILL abusing others, especially their own children, in a case as extreme as this?! It seems cliche to ask what's wrong with the world, so I'll ask myself what I'm going to do about it.
The answer? Blog about it!
Another red flag that is proving we may not have progressed as far as we give ourselves credit for is the fact that International Women's Day is on Sunday, March 8th, and no one knows about it. When I say no one, I mean no one that I know personally, and even that is a vague assumption in itself though I think that a day that is dedicated to CELEBRATING WOMANKIND should be a little more widespread! I haven't heard about it at all! I had stumbled upon an obscure MySpace video filmed in London on the topic and again, felt obliged to share. It's always a possibility that it's just me and I'm freaking out over something that's hardly an issue at all (considering I live under a rock and rarely leave my house) but it wouldn't surprise me that a day to celebrate being a woman would just flit under the radar in the society we live in.
If you're a woman and you're reading this, take a moment on Sunday (aside from the moments you take every day) to stop and take pride in your gender. I could sit here and list all the reasons why I love being a young woman, but the last thing I want to do is start talking about girl power ideals that verge on freaky feministic values. I have a feeling I might delve into that realm by accident. Regardless, I suggest celebrating International Women's Day with a fervor. I know I will be.
I'll end this post with a few links. One leads to a website that left me entertained for at least an hour tonight (press space to erase!), and the other takes you to my twitter, for good measure, where I've posted a link to the website aforementioned. Imagine that!

she's balling Eli Cash
Watching a film with a series of eccentric characters makes me feel so dull. I like to think there are a ton of little quirky things about myself that, if shown in the right light and camera angle, would make me seem so much more appealing. I just feel like no one knows the side of me that has the potential to be captivating. When I submerge myself in films like The Royal Tenenbaums, I'm reminded of just how boring my life must seem from the outside. You'd probably be surprised to hear that there are quite a number of facts about myself that I keep under wraps. Perhaps I'm saving them for the right time, the right place? (New York?) It's also a possibility that I'm simply just not as interesting as I think I am. In The Royal Tenenbaums, Wes Anderson develops several characters far past what's generally expected from a two hour movie. Not only that, but he has enhanced the overall quality of the movie by expanding on his signature stylized twist: lingering shots of scenes, drawn out moments of intensity, the constant eye-level viewpoint. The Darjeeling Limited, another masterpiece of his, shares many of the same aspects and it would be an understatement to say I can hardly wait for his next film: Fantastic Mr. Fox. Roald Dahl AND Wes Anderson? It should be a spectacle indeed.
Margot Tenenbaum, the daughter of Royal Tenenbaum, is a shirt-dress clad closet smoker, eyes lined thickly in black. Margot provides many a plot twist in the movie with a surprisingly subdued, bored approach, and I doubt she could have been played by anyone better than Gwyneth Paltrow. I don't know much about the acress, but I do know that Gwen had this to say about New York. Apparently we share similar views on the city, and I'm beginning to think it's a common thread regarding the big apple. Goop is Gwen's sleek and sometimes overly extravagant website offering one of her favourite things each day to the general public. I like the idea, though in times of penny-pinching and coupon-clipping, it seems a little extravagent. Nonetheless, it's inspired me to share with you a list of things that had me beaming today.
1. this morning's breakfast (half a pink grapefruit, perfectly ripened, not too sour)
2. early birthday presents: a vegetable steamer and a 23x35 print of Audrey Hepburn (thanks mom!)
3. The Royal Tenenbaums (Luke Wilson in particular)
4. an hour dedicated to expanding my knowledge of fashion moguls and the fashion industry in general (with an individual who I would never expect to connect with)
5. cast commaderie (how I've missed it)
6. building friendships with my teachers, being treated as more of a peer than a student (I realize how lame that sounds but it's appreciated)
7. the weather! (it does not feel one bit like winter)
8. when useless trivia facts become useful (for example: why were grapefruits named? a: they grow in bunches)
9. naturally flowing creativity/inspiration (it's been a long time coming)
10. genuine friendship (I find difficulty in expressing how blessed I am lately..)

so i cry hard: let it fall
I finally feel like myself again.
All it took was the simple realization that I can't be in two places at once, and to seek and practice balance between the two places I call home. It was easier than it sounds, trust me. Lately I've noticed that balance isn't the most readily attainable, especially in the fast-paced society we've built around ourselves, but once achieved it can be effortlessly maintained. Maybe it's one of those practice-makes-perfect deals. I just know that I don't know how I managed to do it, but I did it, and I'm happy again.
It could have something to do with my recent acceptance of current technology. Before my mini West Coast holiday this Christmas, I refused to own and operate a cellular device. Downright blatantly refused. I was under the impression that I didn't need such an apparatus in my life, that it was unnecessary to have and a luxury for those who did. Plus, (and this is probably the majority of the reason) I could never afford to foot the bill myself. As far as music goes, I also didn't have a portable music player in my possession that was suitable to my needs before said trip. (Needs meaning much more space than the one I had owned previously) Considering the fact that I am terrible with finances, I was unable to save up enough to buy one, and decided to simply wait for one to come along.
Lo and behold - it did! Both of my deemed 'unnecessary' luxuries that I was doing just fine without (or so I thought) presented themselves at my feet. I'm a little ashamed to say that neither have left my side since they've arrived. I'm also very embarrassed to admit that both have brought incredible joy to my life! I had spent so much time and effort convincing others that I didn't need these things, and in one fell swoop, they had won me over. The phone especially, my little do-everything-er. I forgot how much I love being social, living through my close friends, conversing at all times of the day. It's an aspect of myself that I used to treasure, one that I had somehow lost in the the move back to the citylove of my life. Dr. TJ Eckelburg (yes, I've named my phone) has captured this quality of myself once more. Not only that, but he's hand delivered it to me, complete with bows and ribbons to rival Amanda's wrapping jobs, and has asked nothing in return. It's comforting to be able to rely on something that isn't made of flesh and bone for once. People tend to let you down a great deal more than plastic.
Finally, I've fallen back in step with my other half. It's been a long time coming, and a treacherous road to get here, but Tarla is back in action and raring to go. For a while there, I was worried that I had lost one of the most important parts of myself (no wonder I didn't feel quite right) and I was starting to lose faith in the strength of an unstoppable force. (How blonde can I be?!) I've now reached the conclusion that I worry too much, and that I just need to give time to where time is needed.
It's all about balance.
